Tips to Overcoming Fear in Different Situations
As we head into the new year, a lot of people make resolutions to change a few things in their lives but very few actually keep those resolutions. Fear is a big factor in why people don’t achieve those new goals.
Here are some tips to help conquer those fears from public speaking coach, Lauren Ferraro.
Start by reading out loud at home, in your car, etc… Try not to mumble, whisper or judge yourself. Get used to the sensation of speaking in public.
Going to the gym
Start at home! Dust off the treadmill, watch a YouTube video for stretching, etc… then transition to walking or biking outside (in public) to get used to people being around as you workout. This will help you be more comfortable as you transition to working out at a gym.
Start by revisiting your talents and your values. Don’t start by comparing yourself to others. What do you enjoy doing? What do you stand for? What will you not tolerate? This will help you get motivated, get you energized and set you up for a successful job interview. Get to know yourself all over again and realize what it is you have to offer a potential employer.
Dealing with stress
All of these scenarios can cause us to limit our breathing and set our heart rates through the roof. Try this breathing technique to calm your nerves and focus on your thoughts: breathe in for four seconds, hold it for seven seconds, exhale slowly making an “f” sound.
